Remarkable Rocks
Remarkable Rocks are massive granite boulders in Flinders Chase on Kangaroo Island, shaped over millions of years by wind, rain, and waves into unusual forms. The rocks sit high above the ocean on ancient granite platforms and display warm colors that shift with the changing light throughout the day.
The rocks formed over 500 million years ago and have been continuously reshaped by weathering processes since then. They are remnants of an ancient granite formation that shifted northward as part of continental movement and geological change.
The rocks draw visitors who want to witness natural forces and their lasting effects on the landscape. The bright orange lichen covering the gray granite creates a striking visual that has become central to how people experience and remember this place.
A wooden walkway leads safely to the rocks and is partly designed for visitors with mobility limitations. Visitors should arrive early in the morning or late afternoon for the best light and fewer crowds, and should exercise caution on windy or wet days as the smooth rock surfaces become slippery.
The granite blocks contain black mica, bluish quartz, and pink feldspar, minerals that together give the stone its distinctive appearance. This mineral composition sets these rocks apart from many other granite formations in the region.
