Cape du Couedic Lighthouse

Cape du Couedic Lighthouse is a white tower with a red band rising about 25 meters above the rocky coastline of Kangaroo Island. Three keeper's cottages stand beside the main structure, which once housed staff who maintained the light.

Construction of this lighthouse began in 1906 and was completed in 1909 to protect ships from the dangerous rocky coast. The light remained staffed and operational until 1995, when it became fully automated.

The keeper's cottages next to the lighthouse reveal how lighthouse staff once lived and worked at this remote coastal post. These buildings show the daily rhythm of a life dedicated to guiding ships safely along the shore.

The lighthouse is accessible through Flinders Chase National Park with parking available near the structure and a walking trail to Admirals Arch. Visit on clear days to enjoy the best views of the dramatic coastline from the lookout areas.

The lighthouse uses a special optical lens from the 19th century that creates two distinct light flashes every ten seconds for ship navigation. This vintage technology remains in use today and can be seen by vessels at considerable distance from shore.
