Saut du Loup, Waterfall in Courmes, France
Saut du Loup is a set of two waterfalls carved into the Gorge du Loup near the village of Courmes in southern France. The falls drop into pools of green water, and a bridge next to a nearby restaurant offers a spot where both cascades can be seen at once.
The Gorge du Loup was formed over centuries as the river gradually cut through the limestone rock of the region. The waterfalls became more widely known as tourism grew along the Cote d'Azur during the 20th century, drawing visitors inland from the coast.
The Saut du Loup is also known as the Cascades des Demoiselles, a name that translates roughly as the Waterfalls of the Young Ladies. This second name reflects how local tradition has long seen something graceful in the way the water falls over the rocks.
Parking is available near the restaurant called Saut du Loup, from where a short walk leads to the falls. The flow is much stronger in autumn and spring than in summer, so the visit tends to be more rewarding outside the warmest months.
From the bridge by the restaurant, one waterfall is visible on each side, making it one of the few spots where two falls can be seen without moving. The site is also known as a place where people come to propose marriage, giving it a role quite different from most natural spots.
