Aval Cliff, Natural arch and cliffs in Etretat, France

The Aval Cliff features a 51-meter-high limestone arch formation with a needle-shaped rock rising 70 meters from the sea beside it.

The chalk cliffs of Etretat formed over millions of years through geological processes, creating distinctive formations along the Normandy coastline.

Many 19th-century Impressionist painters, including Claude Monet, created numerous works depicting the natural arch and cliffs in different lights.

Visitors can access the cliff viewpoints via marked trails from Etretat beach, with optimal viewing during low tide between April and October.

The natural arch resembles an elephant dipping its trunk in the sea, while the adjacent needle-like formation stands as a solitary sentinel.
