Manneporte

The Manneporte is a natural stone arch rising from white chalk cliffs along the Normandy coast and emerging directly from the sea. This opening was created by ocean waves and weather, which carved through the limestone to form the passage you see today.

The arch was shaped over millions of years through constant erosion by sea and weather, which slowly hollowed out the limestone. These same forces continue to work, gradually changing the coastline's appearance.

This stone arch has drawn painters and photographers since the 1800s, who found its shape and light constantly changing. Today, visitors experience the same views that captivated these artists over generations.

The best views occur at low tide when you follow marked coastal paths to reach various observation points along the shore. Pay attention to tide times, as water levels change quickly and can block access to some areas.

The arch displays layers of black flint running through the limestone, creating distinct patterns visible when viewed from the beach nearby. These dark bands become especially noticeable at certain times of day when light hits the rock face directly.
