La Grande Cascade, Waterfall in Mont-Dore, France

La Grande Cascade is a waterfall near the town of Mont-Dore in the Auvergne region of France, dropping about 105 feet (32 meters) over a cliff of ancient volcanic rock. The water falls into a forested hollow, surrounded by trees on all sides, and the spray is often felt from a distance before the fall itself comes into view.

The cliff over which the water falls was shaped by ancient lava flows from the nearby Roc de Cuzeau, which built up layers of basalt rock many meters thick. This volcanic past is what gave the entire Sancy massif its characteristic shape, and the waterfall is one of the most visible signs of it today.

La Grande Cascade has become a popular spot for marriage proposals, and many couples choose it for that reason. The sound of the falling water and the forest around it create a setting that feels naturally meaningful to those who visit.

The waterfall can be reached on foot from the center of Mont-Dore in roughly an hour and a half round trip, with some steep sections near the end. Sturdy shoes are a good idea, as the trail can get slippery after rain.

The stream that feeds the waterfall starts on a plateau at about 4,750 feet (1,450 meters) above sea level, but it does not flow all year round. Spring is when the snowmelt swells the stream the most, and visitors who come early in the season see the fall at its fullest.
