Mont-Dore

Mont-Dore is a thermal resort in the Auvergne Alps at about 1,050 meters elevation, surrounded by volcanic peaks like the Puy de Sancy. The village has a ski area with around 30 slopes and connects to the neighboring resort of Super-Besse through mountain passages.

The Romans established the first thermal baths here and left archaeological traces showing how extensive the public bathing facilities were at that time. In the 19th century, the thermal building with its distinctive architecture was reconstructed and has shaped the village ever since.

The name Mont-Dore refers to the golden tones of the mountain landscape in this region. Visitors can see today the traditional Belle-Époque buildings that shape the village and reveal how people once sought rest and healing here.

Visitors should pay attention to the varying elevations since weather and conditions in the mountain regions can change quickly. Good footwear and appropriate clothing are important, especially when moving between slopes or traveling to neighboring areas.

The thermal building from 1817 displays rare Neo-Byzantine architecture with steel framework designed by Gustave Eiffel. This blend of Roman heritage and 19th-century technical innovation makes the location remarkable.
