Lac de Guéry, Volcanic lake at Mont-Dore, France.

Lac de Guéry is a mountain lake in the Auvergne region at approximately 1244 meters elevation, formed within a natural depression shaped by ancient lava flows from the Puy-de-Dôme area. The water spreads across a quiet surface, ringed by forests and open slopes that invite walking and exploration.

The lake formed thousands of years ago when lava flows blocked the Mortes stream, creating a natural water body in the landscape. Later, a small dam was constructed to regulate the water level and maintain the lake during drier seasons.

The lake sits at the boundary where four municipalities meet, serving as a shared gathering place for the region's people. Visitors and locals alike use the surrounding area today as a space for recreation and connection with nature.

The Cap Guéry Mountain Center at the lake provides equipment rentals, information, and access to marked trails around the water. The best time to visit is between spring and autumn, when the paths are dry and most services are available.

This lake is the highest in the entire region, making it a rare destination for mountain enthusiasts. Its location offers visitors a chance to breathe high-altitude air while enjoying the calm of the water.

They have deep water surrounded by mountains. In the Massif Central, volcanic lakes sit in old craters,...
