Puy Pouge is a mountain summit in the Auvergne volcanic region, rising through steep slopes and flatter sections while hosting diverse plant life. The terrain displays volcanic rock formations that shape the landscape and become visible as you climb.

The mountain is part of the Chaîne des Puys, an ancient volcanic chain that formed through geological processes millions of years ago. This volcanic activity shaped the entire region and continues to define its landscape today.

Puy Pouge lies in the Chaîne des Puys, and its name uses the Auvergne term "puy", given to volcanic peaks of the region. The surrounding slopes near Chambon-sur-Lac are farmed and grazed, so walkers share the paths with agricultural land.

Several marked trails lead from the village toward the summit, with good preparation for changing weather conditions being important for the journey. Sturdy footwear and weather-appropriate clothing are needed to move safely across the mountainous terrain.

Puy Pouge rises to 1,324 metres, only about 61 metres above the surrounding terrain, and its base spans roughly 0.32 kilometres. The nearest larger summit is Puy de Monne, 1,692 metres high and about 1.6 kilometres to the east. The village of Saint-Genès-Champanelle lies about 18.9 kilometres to the southwest.
