Coloneum
The Coloneum is a large studio complex in Ehrenfeld, Köln, that has hosted television and film productions since 1999. The facility contains numerous studios, including some of the tallest spaces in Europe with ceiling heights reaching about 26 meters (85 feet), plus one of the largest naturally lit studios at approximately 6,000 square meters (65,000 square feet).
The site was originally Butzweilerhof airport, Köln's first civilian airfield, before it was converted into studios during the 1990s. Development into a modern production center began with renovations of empty warehouse buildings and led to the opening of a major new studio section in 1999 on the former airport grounds.
The Coloneum sits on the grounds of the former Butzweilerhof airport and connects that aviation history with modern entertainment production. Today the site reflects an active production culture where crews work on sets daily and the media industry shapes Ehrenfeld's identity.
The site is open to visitors and offers guided tours and live recordings where you can watch production processes up close. It is helpful to check in advance when recordings are happening, as access to active sets is limited and visitor days vary based on the production schedule.
The Coloneum hosted the German Television Award annually from 1999 to 2014 and can recreate entire famous buildings like the Brandenburg Gate within its tallest studios. This ability to reconstruct large historical locations indoors makes it one of the most capable production venues in Europe.
