The 1. Weltgrößte Kuckucksuhr is a giant walk-in cuckoo clock in Schonach im Schwarzwald, built entirely from wood to resemble a traditional Black Forest house. Visitors can step inside and see the large handmade mechanism that keeps the clock running.
The clock was built by hand over two years by clockmaker Josef Dold and his family, drawing on the long tradition of clockmaking in the Black Forest region. It was conceived as a tribute to a craft passed down through generations in this part of Germany.
The inside of the clock is open to visitors, so it is worth arriving a few minutes before the hour or half hour to see the cuckoo appear. The site is easy to reach by car, and signs in the village point the way to the clock.
The entire mechanism inside the clock is made of wood, including the gears and levers, which stretches over 10 feet (about 3 meters) in length. Walking inside means standing in the middle of a fully working wooden clockwork, which is something very few clocks in the world can offer.
