The name of the church translates literally as 'Mary in the Fir Tree', which refers directly to the tree cavity where a small figure of Mary was originally placed. Visitors today still light candles and leave written prayers near the altar, a habit that has continued for generations.

A tailor is said to have placed a small figure of Mary inside a fir tree cavity in the 17th century as a gesture of thanks after recovering from an illness. That original figure is still kept inside the church today.
