Japanese Garden
The Japanese Garden is an approximately one-acre site in the village of St. Mawgan in Cornwall with different sections including Water, Stroll, Moss, and Zen gardens. Each area features ponds, small bridges, carefully placed stones, and a variety of plants including Japanese maples and azaleas.
The garden was established in 1989 and displays influences of Japanese landscape design. Some of the trees and plants are over a hundred years old, documenting the site's long-term development as a space for contemplation.
The garden reflects an appreciation for Japanese design principles that emphasize harmony between nature and human structures. Visitors notice how stone lanterns, wooden fences, and plant arrangements work together to create a sense of balance and calm.
The paths are gravel and wheelchair accessible with level surfaces, while public toilets and refreshments are available within a short walk. Parking is free on the premises, and it is recommended to check seasonal opening times before visiting the garden.
The garden offers experiences shaped by seasonal color transformations, with Japanese maples turning bright red in autumn and stone arrangements becoming more visible in winter. These seasonal changes make each visit a different experience and show how traditional Japanese gardens work with nature's natural rhythm.
