Cowbridge Physic Garden, Historic physic garden in Cowbridge, Vale of Glamorgan, Wales
Cowbridge Physic Garden is a small historic garden tucked behind a high stone wall in the market town of Cowbridge, in the Vale of Glamorgan, Wales. It has two entrances, one from Church Street and one from Old Hall Gardens, and is laid out in simple, formal beds planted with old herbs, flowers, and trees.
The site once belonged to Old Hall, the Edmondes family estate in the 1700s, and later served as a kitchen garden for the local Grammar School. By the end of the 20th century it had become overgrown, before a community project began restoring it in 2004, opening it to the public in 2006.
The plants in the garden are grouped by their traditional uses, such as healing, cooking, or dyeing fabric. Volunteers are present on Thursday mornings and are happy to answer questions about the plants and their history.
Entry is free and the garden is open throughout the year, with longer hours in summer. The paths are flat and wide enough for wheelchairs, and a ramp at the entrance makes access straightforward.
Most of the plants in the garden come from varieties that have been grown for more than 200 years, with no modern hybrids. The garden was also created as part of the celebration marking 750 years since Cowbridge was granted its borough status, tying it directly to the town's own story.
