Caves of Cushendun

Caves of Cushendun are sea caves formed naturally in the coastal cliffs of County Antrim, located at the southern end of Cushendun Beach. The rocks display reddish-orange tones with moist walls shaped by waves and saltwater, hosting small shells and marine organisms.

The caves formed over 400 million years ago during the Devonian period when Ireland lay closer to the equator with warm conditions prevailing. Around 13,000 years ago, following the last Ice Age, rising sea levels and water erosion carved them into their present shape.

The caves became known worldwide after appearing in Game of Thrones, where they served as a filming location for key scenes. Visitors recognise the rocky setting instantly and connect the place with the dark mood of the series.

Parking is available in Cushendun village and at the beach, from where it is a short walk to the caves. Visit on clear days with calm seas, as rough weather and high waves make the caves dark and walking difficult.

The reddish-orange stones in the caves date from the Devonian period 400 million years ago when Ireland experienced tropical conditions. This rare rock formation is seldom found across the British Isles and reveals a forgotten climate era.
