Fanal, Forest trail in Madeira, Portugal

Fanal is a forest area in Madeira's highlands where ancient laurel trees grow amid dense mist. The landscape consists of narrow paths winding between gnarled trunks, rocky ground, and the constant interplay of clouds drifting through the canopy.

These laurel forest remnants belong to a woodland type that was widespread across Europe during earlier geological periods. Thousands of years of mountain winds and harsh highland climate have shaped the trees into their distinctive gnarled forms.

The name Fanal comes from an old beacon that once guided seafarers to the island. Today, the gnarled trees and misty paths reflect how locals have long connected this place to stories of navigation and mystery.

The location sits at high elevation and is accessible to hikers of all levels, though weather protection is essential. Early morning hours offer the best visibility before fog becomes thicker and conditions more challenging.

The trees grow in extremely twisted forms, not because of their age alone but because of powerful mountain winds that have shaped them for centuries. This wind-driven deformation makes each tree a distinctive natural sculpture.
