Bodegas Muga S.A.
Bodegas Muga is a winery in Haro located in the heart of the Rioja wine region, founded in 1932 and housed in a traditional farmhouse in the Barrio de la Estacion neighborhood. The facility includes old cellars with large oak vats, a modern three-story Torre Muga building built in 2008, and an on-site cooperage where barrels are handcrafted, primarily from French and American oak.
The winery was founded in 1932 by Isaac Muga Martinez and Aurora Cano and has remained family-owned for three generations. The farmhouse building where it is located is over 200 years old, dating to a period when the Rioja region was already recognized for winemaking.
The name Bodegas Muga comes from founder Isaac Muga Martinez and reflects the family's three-generation involvement in winemaking. Visitors can observe how local customs remain present in daily work, from barrel-making by hand to careful grape harvesting in the Rioja Alta vineyards.
Visitors should book in advance and can participate in guided tours lasting about one and a half hours, which include the old cellars, large oak vats, and conclude with three wine tastings. The facility is open Monday through Saturday, and staff speak Spanish and English to answer questions about production and history.
The winery operates its own cooperage with craftspeople who handmake all barrels, a practice rare in Spain that gives each production batch a distinct character. Additionally, the facility offers hot air balloon rides over the Rioja vineyards where visitors gently float above the vines and then enjoy a traditional local meal.
