Selime Katedrali, Rock-cut church ruins in Güzelyurt, Turkey

Selime Katedrali is a large rock-cut ruin at the end of the Ihlara Valley, near the town of Selime in Güzelyurt, Turkey. The structure rises on two levels, with a main church divided into three sections by two rows of columns carved directly from the rock.

The complex was carved between the 8th and 11th centuries by Christian monks during the Byzantine period. After the region changed hands over the centuries, the site continued to be used for shelter and worship before eventually falling into ruin.

Wall paintings from the Byzantine period are still visible inside, showing figures such as Jesus and Mary. The site was also a training center for clergy, which explains the size and variety of its carved rooms.

The site sits on a hillside and involves some climbing, so sturdy shoes are strongly recommended. Visiting in the morning is more comfortable, as the rock surfaces can get very hot under the midday sun.

The entrance features a tall corridor wide enough for loaded camels to pass through, a trace of an ancient trade route that once ran through this part of Cappadocia. Caravans would stop here to rest, and the corridor connected the outdoor yard directly to the church area.
