Río Secreto

Río Secreto is a large underground cave system with water-filled passages located beneath the jungle south of Playa del Carmen. The caves contain stalagmites and stalactites as well as clear blue water through which visitors can swim, and it has been open for guided tours since 2008.

The caves were opened to visitors in 2008 after being discovered in an unusual way when a landowner fell into a hole while chasing a lizard across his property. A geologist friend then helped map the system and explore its extent.

The name Río Secreto means 'Secret River' and reflects the hidden nature of this underground system deep in the jungle. The caves serve as a place where visitors today encounter natural forces in their pure form and float through clear water, shaping how people connect with this subterranean space.

The tour requires visitors ages four and up to proceed in groups with multilingual guides who provide equipment such as wetsuits, helmets, and life jackets. It is best to arrive at least 20 minutes early and shower beforehand to protect the delicate environment.

The caves were discovered through a chance fall, and professional photographers document visits while personal cameras are not allowed. Photos can be purchased later and simultaneously help protect the fragile underground ecosystem.
