Anfiteatro Altos de Chavón, Open-air theater in La Romana, Dominican Republic

The Anfiteatro Altos de Chavón is an open-air stone theater in La Romana, Dominican Republic, modeled after ancient Greek amphitheaters. Stone seating curves in a semicircle around a large stage set into a forested hillside.

The amphitheater was designed in 1976 by Italian artist Roberto Coppa and officially opened in 1982. Its inaugural concert drew acts including Frank Sinatra and Carlos Santana, setting the tone for decades of international performances.

The amphitheater is built in the style of an ancient Greek arena, yet it sits inside a re-created 16th-century Mediterranean village. This contrast between two different historical worlds shapes how visitors experience the space.

The amphitheater sits within the Altos de Chavón complex near Casa de Campo, a short drive from La Romana. Arriving early before an event gives time to walk through the surrounding village and find a good seat before the show begins.

The amphitheater holds around 5,000 people, making it one of the largest open-air venues in the Caribbean. Despite being modeled on ancient structures, it was built recently enough to function as a fully working modern concert space.
