Dubai Metro, Automated rapid transit system in Dubai, United Arab Emirates
Dubai Metro is a driverless rapid transit system in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, operating two main lines: the Red Line and the Green Line. Trains run above ground on elevated tracks and underground in the city center, connecting major neighborhoods, business districts, shopping centers, and the international airport.
The opening day was September 9, 2009, when the first ten stations of the Red Line began service and the city gained its first rail-based mass transit solution. The Green Line followed a few months later in 2010, expanding the network into additional neighborhoods.
The train system offers separate zones for women and children alongside a Gold Class section providing extra comfort, meeting the needs of different passenger groups. Riders appreciate the cool air conditioning as a contrast to the outdoor heat and experience an international atmosphere where tourists and business commuters mingle on the platforms.
Travelers purchase or top up a Nol card at the vending machines in every station and can use it to pay in buses and water taxis as well. During rush hours the carriages fill up quickly, so it is advisable to travel outside the morning and evening peak commuting times.
The trains run without driver cabins and offer passengers a clear forward view from the front, which particularly fascinates children. Several stations on the Red Line sit so close to skyscrapers that travelers can look directly into the glass fronts of office towers when entering and leaving the platforms.
