Khndzoresk Bridge, Suspension bridge in Khndzoresk, Armenia
Khndzoresk Bridge is a metal and wood footbridge that stretches 160 meters across a gorge at a height of 63 meters above the canyon floor. It connects the older settlement on one side to the newer part of the village on the other, providing passage to several churches and a spring.
The bridge was built in 2012 by businessman Zhora Aleksanyan as a memorial to his parents Hayk and Tamara. It reconnected the two sections of the village after decades of separation following the migration from cave dwellings.
The bridge connects both halves of the village and provides passage to cave dwellings that families inhabited for countless generations. Visitors can observe today how residents once lived directly within the carved rock structures and organized their daily routines.
The structure is firmly built and can safely support several hundred people at the same time without concerns. Visiting on clear days allows you to enjoy the views into the canyon and walk comfortably across the metal and wood surface.
Below the bridge lies a shrine dedicated to the legendary military commander Mkhitar Sparapet and remains of the old cemetery. Most visitors hurry across without noticing this quieter historical place beneath their feet.
