Zangezur corridor, Transport corridor in Syunik Province, Armenia
The Zangezur corridor is a proposed transport link through the southern Armenian province of Syunik, intended to connect Azerbaijan with its exclave of Nakhchivan. The route would cross Armenian territory and create a direct connection between the two parts of Azerbaijan.
The idea emerged after the 2020 ceasefire in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, when discussions about new transport routes between the involved states began. The name refers to a historical district established by the Russian Empire in the 19th century in this region.
The transport route traverses through areas where Armenian and Azerbaijani communities have maintained distinct traditions and customs over many generations.
The transport corridor exists only as a project at this stage and is not accessible to travelers. The planning focuses mainly on freight movement and aims to reduce travel time between different regions in the future.
The proposed route would restore a connection between regions that was interrupted for centuries, dating back to medieval times. Discussion about the project also influences considerations for other cross-border transport routes in the southern Caucasus.
