Meghri Fortress

Meghri Fortress is a medieval defensive complex spread across mountain peaks north of the old town. The site consists of five remaining towers - four round and two rectangular structures - positioned on hilltops that command views across the surrounding landscape.

The fortress dates from the 11th century and underwent major rebuilding in 1152 under Seljuk control. In the 18th century, Davit Bek added further reinforcements to strengthen its defensive capability.

The fortress displays Armenian building methods that use wooden beams in the walls to provide protection against earthquakes. This construction technique was typical for defensive structures in the region.

The site spreads across several hilltops that are reachable on foot, with each tower offering different views depending on where you stand. Wear sturdy shoes and allow time to walk between the towers and explore the varied terrain around them.

Unlike typical Armenian fortifications, this fortress does not rely on continuous defensive walls between towers but instead uses the natural mountain ridge itself as part of the defense system. This clever use of terrain allowed control over the valley below without requiring extensive construction.
