Baghaberd, Medieval castle in Syunik Province, Armenia.
Baghaberd is a medieval fortress located on a mountain ridge in Syunik Province at 1438 meters in elevation, built upon natural rock formations. The site uses steep cliffs on three sides as natural defensive barriers.
The fortress was founded in the 4th century by Baghak of Sisak Nahapet and served as an important regional stronghold. After the destruction of Kapan in 1103, it became the final capital of the Syunik kingdom.
The fortress served as a shelter for religious treasures and manuscripts from Armenian monasteries during times of conflict. Local communities trusted it as a safe place for their most precious cultural belongings.
The fortress is only accessible by sport utility vehicle due to its remote mountain location and rough terrain. The long journey of around 376 kilometers from Yerevan should be considered when planning a visit.
Prince Andovk of Syunik developed an unusual defensive tactic at this fortress when facing the armies of Persian King Shapur II. His defenders rolled massive stones down the mountain slopes to repel the attackers.
