Tatev monastery, Armenian monastery in Tatev, Armenia
The monastery complex stands on a basalt plateau above the Vorotan River gorge, containing three churches, residential quarters, and fortification walls.
Founded in 801, the monastery became the seat of the Syunik bishops and developed into a major religious center during the medieval period.
The monastery housed the University of Tatev in the 14th century, where scholars studied manuscripts, practiced miniature painting, and taught sciences.
The Wings of Tatev aerial tramway connects the monastery to Halidzor village across a 5.7-kilometer distance, offering transportation for visitors throughout the year.
The Gavazan column, an octagonal pillar in the courtyard, functions as a seismic sensor that tilts and returns to its position during earth movements.
