Tren Hospital ALMA, Mobile pediatric hospital train in Buenos Aires and Santiago del Estero, Argentina.
The Tren Hospital ALMA is a mobile hospital composed of three railway cars equipped with medical facilities and examination rooms. The train travels through remote areas of northern Argentina, bringing healthcare directly to children in communities far from established medical centers.
This project began in 1980 when pediatrician Martin Jorge Urtasun created it to serve children in remote areas where medical services were unavailable. The train has since completed numerous journeys, gradually expanding its reach across isolated communities.
The train carries volunteer doctors who travel to small towns and villages where families would otherwise struggle to access medical care for their children. These healthcare workers meet families from different backgrounds and learn about the specific health challenges that each region faces.
The train departs from Retiro Station in Buenos Aires and takes several weeks to complete a journey through northern regions. Travelers should know that departure dates are announced in advance and the stops are distributed across remote communities that have limited other medical access.
Beyond basic check-ups, the train treats specialized diseases like tuberculosis and Chagas disease that are common in remote areas where people have had little medical contact. This ability to handle complex health conditions while traveling sets it apart from simple mobile clinics.
