Glungezerbahn, Cable car system in Tulfes, Austria
Glungezerbahn is a cable car system in Tulfes with two sections: a ten-passenger gondola goes to Halsmarter station, while the Tulfein Express climbs to 2055 meters elevation. The system connects the valley with mountain peaks and allows access to various recreational areas at altitude.
The system was built in the 20th century to open up the Tyrolean mountain region for winter sports and recreation. This infrastructure development was part of a broader expansion of Alpine access for tourism.
The mountain stations house traditional Alpine huts where visitors can enjoy regional Tyrolean dishes prepared using generations-old recipes and methods. These spots show how local food traditions have long been tied to the natural ingredients of the area.
The facility is best reached on foot from the village of Tulfes and offers plenty of room for visitors at both stations. Warm clothing is important since temperatures at altitude are noticeably cooler than in the valley.
In summer the facility serves as a popular starting point for hikes through the surrounding mountain landscape with many marked trails. The gondola itself offers shifting views of the valleys and peaks below during the ride.
