Heidelberg Historical Society, history museum in Heidelberg VIC , Australia
The Heidelberg Historical Society is a museum housed in a former courthouse built around 1900, located at the corner of Jika Street and Park Lane. The building preserves its original features including wooden floors, high ceilings, and period details, while holding approximately 2000 items such as photographs, maps, prints, and artifacts that document the area's story.
The Society was established in 1967 to preserve local history, after the courthouse had served as the center of judicial life for nearly 70 years. In 1979, the Society acquired the building, saving it from possible alteration or demolition and transforming it into a key site for protecting and sharing the area's past.
The Society honors the Wurundjeri, the traditional custodians of this land, and acknowledges the First Nations peoples whose presence here spans tens of thousands of years. The place connects this deep history with European settlement from the 1830s onward, showing how both stories shaped the region's character.
The museum and library are open to visitors on Sundays from 2 to 5 in the afternoon, located opposite Heidelberg Park. The location is easily accessible for families and individuals, and rotating displays mean you can discover different items and stories on each visit.
The photograph collection traces Heidelberg's development through old street scenes and key events, offering a real sense of how life looked in the area long ago. These visual records allow visitors to experience the everyday history of the place directly rather than simply reading about it.
