Fort Gellibrand, Military fortification in Williamstown, Victoria, Australia
Fort Gellibrand is a military fortification in Williamstown located on the southernmost tip of the peninsula, extending into Hobsons Bay and Port Phillip Bay. It includes gun emplacements and various military buildings built across different periods.
The fort was established in 1855 as part of the colonial defense system against potential naval attacks on Melbourne. Convict laborers constructed the original battery, laying the foundation for the site's later development and expansion.
The site displays military buildings from different eras, including the 1884 Drill Hall and 1907 Artillery Store, which shape how the place looks today. Visitors can walk through these structures and sense how military life changed over decades.
The site is open to visitors and allows exploration of historical areas on the grounds. Sturdy footwear is recommended since the terrain is uneven and parts of it are exposed to wind and weather from the bay.
The fort is one of the few remaining batteries among four originally built at Point Gellibrand and houses disappearing guns along with original nineteenth-century defense installations. These specialized weapons were designed to hide from view when not in use, protecting them from enemy fire.
