Westbrook Reformatory for Boys, Correctional facility in Toowoomba Region, Australia.
Westbrook Reformatory for Boys was a state institution housed on grounds between Toowoomba Athol Road, Westbrook Wyreema Road, and Althaus Road. The site contained residential buildings, training areas, and farmland where young people learned practical skills in various trades.
The facility was established in 1900 after relocating from earlier sites including the Proserpine prison ship and Lytton. It operated under different administrative names until its closure in 1994.
Boys at the facility received agricultural training, managing farmland and gardens while learning skills in livestock care and crop cultivation.
The site is located in a rural area and requires personal transport to reach. Most remains are difficult to access as there is no visitor center or marked trails.
A hay-fire escape incident in 1961 prompted a government inquiry that fundamentally changed how the facility was run and managed. The findings led to new policies and reorganized the handling of younger residents.
