Baie Saint-Michel, Lakeside campground in Chorges, France
Baie Saint-Michel is a lakeside campsite on Lake Serre-Ponçon with around 120 terraced pitches built into the hillside. Visitors can choose between traditional tent spaces and prefabricated wooden pod structures with varying comfort levels.
The campsite developed following construction of the Serre-Ponçon dam during the 1960s, which transformed the local landscape. This infrastructure led to growth of recreational facilities throughout the newly created lakeside region.
The municipal campground promotes environmental values through its design, encouraging outdoor activities while maintaining connections with local communities and traditions.
The site sits at 825 meters elevation with direct lake access and facilities for bicycle storage and device charging. Visitors should be prepared for changing mountain weather depending on the season.
From the grounds, visitors can spot the ruins of Saint-Michel Chapel standing on an island in the middle of the water. This historical structure was partially submerged when the reservoir formed, creating a distinctive landmark visible from shore.
