La Palatriere, Lakeside campground in Le Sauze-du-Lac, France
La Palatriere is a three-star facility with approximately 50 grassy pitches for tents and motorhomes, plus rental chalets arranged across a landscaped site. The grounds slope toward Lake Serre-Ponçon with vegetation and pathways connecting different camping zones.
The site opened in the 1960s when a dam was built on the Durance River to create Lake Serre-Ponçon, one of France's largest artificial reservoirs at that time. This construction transformed the mountain valley and brought tourism to the region in the decades that followed.
Guests naturally gather here during summer evenings and exchange stories about the region and mountains while sharing local food specialties. This informal social rhythm shapes how visitors experience their stay together in a shared outdoor setting.
The grounds operate seasonally from May through September with a heated swimming pool, children's water area, and spa facilities available on-site. An on-site restaurant serves dinner, so you can plan your evening meals without leaving the property.
From most pitches you can see the lake's clear water directly with the Southern Alps rising in the distance. The elevation means cool nights and often clearer skies, making stargazing a common evening activity for guests.
