O Abel is a restaurant in the village of Gimonde, near the Montesinho Natural Park in northern Portugal. The dining room is simply furnished, with wooden furniture, a small wood stove, and regional artwork on the walls.
The restaurant was founded on April 1, 1984, by Abel and his wife Clóris, who had previously worked as a truck driver and homemaker. They started with simple snacks, including the well-known tripe with beans, and gradually added grilled dishes to the menu.
O Abel is a gathering spot for locals from Gimonde and the surrounding area, who come here after a long day of work to eat and talk. The restaurant also sells regional products like cured meats, cheese, and ceramics, which visitors can take home.
The restaurant does not accept reservations, so arriving a little early is a good idea, especially on weekends and holidays. It is open for lunch and dinner, except on Wednesdays and Sunday evenings.
The Câmara de Bragança awarded the restaurant a merit diploma for its contribution to the local rural economy. The place started with tripe and beans served in a traditional bowl called malga as its only famous dish, and has since grown into a full grill restaurant.
