Castle of Bragança, Medieval fortress and military museum in Bragança, Portugal
Castelo de Bragança is a medieval fortress with thick granite perimeter walls and fifteen defensive turrets rising above the city. The central keep dominates the layout and gives the structure its distinctive profile.
King Sancho II began construction in the 13th century, and King Denis reinforced the fortification around 1300 to secure the northern border. This development reflects the site's strategic importance for Portuguese defense policy.
The castle houses a collection showing the evolution of Portuguese military traditions over centuries. Visitors can see how weapons and armor changed across different periods.
The site is open on most days of the week, but it is best to check current opening times beforehand. Access is from above through the city, and exploring the walls and turrets can be done on foot.
The fortress contains finds from Paleolithic settlements that existed long before the castle was built on this spot. These archaeological remains show how long this hilltop has been important to people.
