El Xampanyet
El Xampanyet is a small tapas bar in the El Born area of Ciutat Vella, Barcelona. Inside, blue tiles line the walls, the tables are marble, and old photographs hang alongside vintage posters, giving the space a worn-in, lived look.
El Xampanyet opened in 1929 as a small family-run bar and has changed very little since then. It has passed through several generations of the same family, which explains why its decor and offerings have stayed so consistent over the decades.
El Xampanyet is known for its house-made sparkling wine, also called xampanyet, which has been produced and served here for decades. Regulars often order it by reflex, pairing it with anchovies or a slice of tortilla at the marble counter.
The bar does not take reservations, so arriving early in the afternoon or just after opening gives you the best chance of finding a seat. It sits on a pedestrian street in El Born, making it easy to reach on foot from several other points of interest nearby.
The blue wall tiles inside the bar date back to when it first opened and have never been replaced. If you look closely, you can spot small cracks and worn patches that quietly record decades of daily use.
