CosmoCaixa Barcelona, Science museum in Sant Gervasi-la Bonanova, Spain
CosmoCaixa Barcelona is a science museum in the Sant Gervasi-la Bonanova neighborhood that covers several floors and presents natural science topics through hands-on stations. The building includes sections for physics, geology, biology, and astronomy with numerous experiments for touching and trying.
Josep Domènech i Estapà designed the building between 1904 and 1909 originally for other purposes before it was converted into a museum. The comprehensive renovation took several years and led to the reopening as CosmoCaixa in September 2004.
The Fundació Bancària "la Caixa" runs the museum as a nonprofit institution dedicated to promoting scientific thinking among the general public. School groups regularly visit the different floors, while families on weekends attend workshops and demonstrations.
The museum opens Tuesday through Sunday between 10:00 and 20:00, with modified hours on public holidays. Closure days on December 25, January 1, and January 6 should be considered when planning a visit.
A 1000-square-meter greenhouse hall recreates an Amazon ecosystem where piranhas, crocodiles, and tropical plants live. The temperature and humidity in the room match conditions in the real rainforest.
