Mercado del Este spreads across about 2000 square meters between Plaza Porticada and Plaza Pombo, with interior galleries containing shops and dining options. The structure combines shopping and eating in one location where visitors find everything together.

Antonio Zabaleta designed this commercial structure in 1842, introducing the concept of indoor shopping galleries to Spain. This building pioneered a new way for people to shop and spend time together.

The building houses the Museum of Prehistory and Archaeology of Cantabria, displaying regional artifacts from different time periods. Visitors can explore collections that tell the story of the area's ancient past.
