Spiaggia del Cannone, Small beach in Tropea, Italy
Spiaggia del Cannone is a small beach north of the tourist harbor with fine sand, pebbles, and rocks bordered by Mediterranean vegetation on both sides. The shoreline features a mixed seafloor and is shaped by natural formations that invite exploration.
The beach name comes from a 17th-century cannon discovered in nearby waters, now displayed at the Largo Galluppi viewpoint overlooking San Leonardo rock. This discovery links the location to the area's maritime and military past.
Local merchants traditionally used natural rock pools in the nearby cave to soak and mature lupini beans in seawater for several days.
Access requires descending stairs from the northern pier of the tourist port, with the beach open from 8 AM to 6 PM. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear as the stairs are steep and the rocky shoreline can be slippery.
Swimmers can reach a cave from this beach that connects to another shore called La Rotonda through an underwater passage. This hidden route creates a secret connection between two separate beaches.
