Sørvågen

Sørvågen, Fishing village in Moskenes, Norway

Sørvågen is a fishing village on the southwestern coast of Moskenesøya island, where steep mountains rise directly from the sea. The settlement clusters along the shoreline with traditional buildings and fishing installations adapted to the rugged terrain.

In 1906, the village received a wireless telegraph installation that connected it to Røst island, making it an early technology adopter in Europe. This advancement enabled reliable communication with ships and nearby islands in the region.

The Telecom Museum displays the history of communication technology through telegraph equipment and early wireless devices. The exhibits show how message exchange evolved over time in this remote location.

Reaching the village requires taking the ferry from Bodø to Moskenes, then traveling by bus or a two-kilometer walk along route E10. Limited services are available in the village, so plan ahead for supplies or expect to travel to nearby areas for provisions.

The village operates several fish farms with guest piers where you can watch traditional Norwegian fishing methods and marine cultivation in action. These activities form the backbone of the local economy and daily waterside life.
