Château de Senonches, Medieval castle in Senonches, France.

Château de Senonches is a stone castle with a distinctive tall tower built from regional iron-rich materials. Two additional buildings stand beside the main structure on its eastern side.

The fortress dates to the 11th century, when Hugues II of Châteauneuf-en-Thymerais rebuilt it on top of earlier ruins. This defensive structure arose during a period when such buildings were essential for controlling regional territories.

The castle houses a permanent exhibition about forests, wood production, and the regional landscape. Visitors can see how local people have lived and worked with the surrounding forests for centuries.

The castle is open from Tuesday through Friday between 14:30 and 17:30, with guided tours available through the exhibitions. Visitors should check in advance whether hours remain consistent, especially during holidays or the shoulder season.

The permanent exhibition 'Forêt d'Histoires' explores the deep connection between people and the Senonches forest surrounding the castle. This distinctive collection reveals how generations shaped their surroundings and drew from its resources.

What to see in Perche: medieval castles, Romanesque churches, and museums in Normandy

The Perche region preserves an architectural heritage spanning from the Middle Ages to the classical period. Castles, churches, and abbeys in this Normandy area showcase the evolution of construction techniques and artistic styles from the 11th to the 18th century, influenced by Norman and Ligurian traditions. Medieval fortifications such as the Château de Bellême and Château de Senonches demonstrate the strategic role of this territory between the Duchy of Normandy and the kingdom of France. Religious buildings, including the Church of Saint-Céneri-le-Gérei with its Romanesque murals and the Notre-Dame of Mont Harou with its fortified tower, reflect the importance of monastic and parish life. Lords’ residences like Château de Montimer and Château de Frazé offer insights into residential architecture in Perche. The Perche Museum in Bellême and the Royal Military College Museum in Thiron-Gardais complete this exploration with collections related to regional history and military heritage.
