Casa do Conto, Hotel in Cedofeita, Porto, Portugal
Casa do Conto is a small hotel housed in a 19th-century townhouse in the Cedofeita neighborhood of Porto, Portugal. The building has a tiled facade outside, while inside the structure is built around a central staircase topped by a skylight that draws natural light down through all floors.
The building started as a typical 19th-century bourgeois home with wooden interiors and plaster details. A fire just before the hotel opened in 2009 destroyed most of the original interior, which led the owner, Alexandra Coutinho, to rebuild the inside entirely using exposed concrete.
The name Casa do Conto means "house of tales" in Portuguese. Texts by local authors are carved directly into the concrete ceilings of the rooms, turning each stay into a small encounter with Porto's literary world.
The hotel sits in the Cedofeita district, within walking distance of the Casa da Música and the art galleries along Rua Miguel Bombarda. The nearest metro station is a short walk away, making it easy to move around the rest of the city from here.
A mirror that belonged to the owner's grandfather still hangs near the entrance and is one of the few objects that survived the 2009 fire. The heavy piano in the lounge also survived, simply because it was too heavy to move before the flames reached it.
