Plages des Terrasses de la Mer, Beach in Narbonne, France
The Plages des Terrasses de la Mer is a sandy beach on the Mediterranean coast at Narbonne-Plage, running along the Boulevard de la Méditerranée. The shore is flat and open, with fine light-colored sand that slopes gently into the sea, making the water shallow for a good distance from the shore.
The coastline around Narbonne-Plage was gradually developed for tourism during the 20th century, as the region began drawing summer visitors from inland France. The section known as the Terrasses de la Mer was partly shaped through land reclamation to extend the usable beach area.
The seafront boulevard that runs alongside the sand is lined with cafes, ice cream stands, and small shops that locals use daily throughout the summer. On the beach itself, it is common to see people playing beach volleyball, fishing at the water's edge, or just sitting in groups watching the waves.
The beach is within easy walking distance of the center of Narbonne-Plage, and parking along the boulevard fills up quickly on summer days, so arriving early gives you more options. In summer, lifeguards are on duty, and showers, toilets, and changing rooms are available on-site.
Part of the beach owes its name to an artificial raised section that was built out over the sand, giving the area a terrace-like appearance when seen from the water. The first lifeguard post also has a dedicated mat that runs from dry land directly into the sea, one of the few such setups along this stretch of coast.
