Saint Pierre La Mer Beach, Beach in Fleury, France
Plage Saint Pierre la Mer is a sandy beach on the Mediterranean coast in Fleury, in the Aude department of southern France. A rocky outcrop called the Roc de la Batterie divides the shoreline into two sections: a southern part with shallow waters and a northern part that is more open and exposed to the wind.
Fleury began as a small fishing hamlet whose inhabitants built huts from reeds, some of which still stand today. During the 20th century, the coast gradually attracted summer visitors, and the settlement slowly grew into a seaside destination.
The beach sits at the edge of the La Clape massif, a limestone ridge covered with lavender, thyme, and rosemary. Visitors who leave the sand quickly find walking trails into the interior, where the smell of the scrubland is strong and the views open up toward the coast.
The beach is easy to reach by car, with parking available close to the shore. The southern section, with its calmer and shallower water, is a better option for families with young children, while the northern stretch suits those looking for more space.
Near the beach lies the Gouffre de l'Oeil Doux, a small natural lake surrounded by high rocks. Swimming there is not allowed, but the view from above over the deep blue water is worth the short detour.
