Praia de Caminha, Sand beach in Moledo e Cristelo, Portugal
Praia de Caminha is a sand beach in Moledo e Cristelo that stretches along the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the Minho River on the other. The coarser river sand differs noticeably from the finer ocean sand along the shore.
Forte de Insua was built in the 17th century on an island about 200 meters offshore and originally served as a chapel. The structure was later converted for military defense to protect the coastline.
The beach marks the border between Portugal and Spain where the Minho River meets the sea. This location makes it possible to stand at a point where two countries are visible at once.
The beach has wheelchair accessible areas, outdoor parking, and shower facilities available to visitors. Small watercraft rentals are also offered if you wish to explore the water.
The Mata Nacional do Camarido, a protected forest, borders the shoreline directly. This woodland is an unusual sight in this coastal region and creates a striking contrast with the sand and water.
