Cité Jardin de Suresnes is a residential complex with red brick buildings, lawns, playgrounds, shops, a theater, and shared gardens spread across about 42 hectares. The site combines multi-story apartment blocks with individual pavilions and includes schools, sports facilities, medical centers, and public baths.
Henri Sellier initiated construction of this social housing project in 1921 with modern conveniences like electricity and running water. The development eventually encompassed about 3,300 residences and shaped regional life for decades to come.
The streets honor international figures who championed peace, including Sully, Grotius, and Jean Jaures from different cultures and faiths. Walking through the neighborhood, you encounter this peaceful message embedded in the very layout of the streets.
The site is large and best explored on foot or by bicycle, as it consists of several zones with different functions. Visitors should take advantage of the spacious green areas and calm street layout to move through the neighborhood at a leisurely pace.
The architects created a balance between four-story residential blocks and about 170 individual pavilions, allowing a mix of urban and rural living. This dual approach was uncommon for housing projects of this scale at the time.
