Maidan Al-Shuhada

Maidan Al-Shuhada is a large central square in Tripoli with a fountain at its center and wide avenues that open toward the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Castle. The square is surrounded by commercial buildings and public facilities that make it a major transportation hub in the city.

The square was originally laid out as Piazza Italia during Italian colonial rule and later received different names including Green Square during Gaddafi's time. Its name changed repeatedly to reflect political shifts in Libyan history.

The square sits where Omar Mukhtar Avenue and Independence Street meet, serving as the commercial heart of Tripoli with shops and cafes throughout. People gather here daily to shop, meet friends, and spend time in the center of the city.

The square is located near the Red Castle museum and offers easy access to public transportation and various services. Visitors will find numerous shops, cafes, and restaurants here to meet a range of needs.

The square was the site of significant gatherings during the 2011 revolution, when thousands of people came together to celebrate the end of a period of rule. These moments made it a symbol of change in modern Libyan history.
