Tripoli Castle, Medieval castle in Tripoli, Libya
Tripoli Castle, also known as Assaraya al-Hamra or the Red Castle, is a large fortress in the center of Libya's capital, positioned along the Mediterranean coast. It consists of thick stone walls, defensive towers, inner courtyards, and a series of halls spread across several levels.
The fortress was first built by Arab rulers in the 7th century and was later expanded and reshaped under Ottoman control starting in the 16th century. Italian colonial authorities used and modified it further in the early 20th century, leaving structural additions still visible today.
Walking through the fort, visitors can see pointed arches, carved stone doorways, and tiled courtyards that reflect different periods of construction side by side. The Ottoman sections feel particularly layered, with narrow passageways opening onto open terraces facing the sea.
The castle is located in central Tripoli near the old medina, making it easy to reach on foot from many parts of the city center. Bring sturdy shoes since the floors inside are uneven and there are several staircases with low lighting.
Part of the museum collection inside the fortress comes from objects found by chance during construction work in the city rather than from planned digs. Among them are Roman inscriptions that were originally built into other structures and only later brought here for preservation.
