Tripoli Zoo, Animal park in central Tripoli, Libya
Tripoli Zoo is an animal park in central Tripolis with sections dedicated to various species including bears, gazelles, crowned cranes, and black leopards. The grounds also contain botanical gardens where visitors can observe different plant collections.
The zoo closed in 2011 during the Libyan Civil War as security concerns disrupted operations. The facility then faced significant challenges in maintaining proper care for its animals during this difficult period.
The exterior walls feature detailed relief sculptures depicting African wildlife such as rhinos, giraffes, hippos, and elephants, showing local artistic traditions. These carvings give visitors a sense of how the community expresses its connection to the continent's natural world.
The grounds are divided into multiple sections, allowing visitors to navigate between African and international species collections. Wearing comfortable shoes is recommended, as walking between the different areas takes time.
After 2011, the facility temporarily served as a detention center while still housing its animal collection under difficult conditions. This unusual dual use makes the site a notable example of how conflicts affect urban institutions.
