Le Channel, Arts centre in Calais, France
Le Channel is an arts centre in Calais, housed in a set of former slaughterhouses from the 19th century. The site brings together several performance halls, including the large La Grande Halle, along with a bookstore and two restaurants.
The buildings were constructed in the 19th century as slaughterhouses, at a time when Calais was growing fast. They were eventually abandoned and later converted into a space for arts and culture.
The site is easy to walk through, with a large courtyard that works as a central meeting point. It is worth checking the program ahead of time, as the schedule changes regularly with the season.
The designer François Deloziere transformed an old water tower on the site into a lookout point standing about 72 feet (22 meters) high. From the top, you get a full view over all the buildings of the complex.
